Who We Are

We have developed an innovative and interactive curriculum that our trained educators teach to students in fifth grade through high school throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachussetts.  In addition to our traditional classroom program, the KBEP has developed two summer programs, one for high schools students and one for middle school students.  These summer curricula meet all the same objectives of our traditional classroom program but are designed to be delivered in more non-traditional settings. Some of our non-traditional settings include correctional facilities, substance abuse programs, summer camps, after-school programs, and group homes.  The KBEP teaches students the imperative information needed in order to build and maintain healthy relationships, which includes the following subjects:

v     Types of Violence

v     Personal Rights

v     Setting and Respecting Boundaries

v     Healthy Conflict

v     Dating Expectations

v     Gender Stereotypes

v     Healthy Expression of Anger

v     Warning Signs of Dating Violence

v     Self Esteem

v     Cycle of Violence

v     Anger Regulation

Through this education, we are changing attitudes, perceptions and behaviors revolving around bullying, teen dating violence and cyber violence.  The KBEP strives to eliminate these harmful ways of thinking by empowering youth to take a stand for themselves without resorting to violence.

What We Do

Our Mission: "Based on the belief that education is the foundation and channel for permanent
change in attitudes and behaviors, the Katie Brown Educational Program promotes respectful relationships by teaching relationship violence prevention."

The Katie Brown Educational Program (KBEP) was founded in 2001 in response to the brutal murder of Katherine “Katie” Brown, from Barrington, Rhode Island.  Katie was only 20 years old when she was killed by the young man she had dated on and off since high school.  KBEP is dedicated to the recognition and prevention of relationship violence.  We do this work to memorialize Katie’s life and honor everyone who has been impacted by relationship violence.
