The Brockton Church and Community After School Program serves children and families of the Arnone Elementary School, Brockton, on two afternoons each week. We also serve children who attend other schools, but live in our "neighborhood" one day a week. Volunteer tutors give one-on-one homework assistance in this free program for children identified as needing encouragement and support by the teachers and principal of the school. After the initial hour for homework, students move to small groups for "Learning Projects", such as arts & crafts, storytime, and nature/discovery. All children, regardless of race, religious affiliation, ethnic background or class, are eligible. There is no religious component to the program.
What We Do
The Brockton Church and Community After School Program is committed to providing a safe space for children during after school and out-of-school time, with homework assistance provided by caring adults. Volunteers provide one-on-one help, focusing especially on literacy. Among our goals are helping students to reach, maintain and/or surpass grade level in reading and mathematics. The Brockton Church and Community After School Program began more than 15 years ago in response to needs identified by members of Central United Methodist Church. Originally founded under the sponsorship of Brockton Interfaith Community, the program now operates under the tax exempt status of its host site, Central UM Church. It has its own Board of Directors, and receives funding from foundations, local banks, faith communities, individual donors and The United Way.
