Our mission is to provide continuum of care and support to all people, especially those affected by addiction, by responding to their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual needs. the ability to provide this kind of comprehensive care and adapt to the complexity of community and client needs has always been the heart of SSTAR's success.
What We Do
SSTAR began as the Center for Alcohol Problems, an alcohol detoxification program developed by Dr. Frank Lepreau, Ricki Alpert and others. Even during those early years, SSTAR practiced holistic care, treating the mind, body and spirit to overcome the disease of addiction. As we recognized the need to further holistic treatment, we became a mental health clinic, serving women who had experienced trauma that is often linked to substance use issues or incidents. In the 1980's the need for integrative services became more obvious during the start of the HIV epidemic. We soon realized that in order to treat the whole person, we had to add primary healthcare to our services. We then launched our Community Health Center. Subsequently, we established other cutting-edge programs such as the region's first walk-in HIV testing clinic and the first inpatient substance abuse detoxification unit. In 2013 SSTAR began its Open Access program. Inpatient, outpatient, methadone, or medication needs, no appointments necessary. Just walk in during the specified hours. SSTAR's compassionate, professional staff will provide you with the proper assessment and treatment plan, on the spot, that putsyou at the center and supports your efforts to live a healthy lifestyle. Our group driven model provides you with the flexibility to choose the path that best suits you in achieving your treatment goals, and at the times that are most convenient. Counselors are still available for individual counseling. We are proud that SSTAR remains a trusted community organization.
