What We Do

The West End Day Nursery is a non profit tax-exempt charitable institution organized to provide proper care and supervision for needy children including family service, child development, education health, recreation and nutritional programs. The West End Day Nursery strives to encourage the children to work and play with each other constructively. The Dept of Early Education and Care sets the sliding fee tuition. All staff members are certified through the Dept of Early Education and Care. The Dept of Early Education and Care is a state run agency that sets the standard for all group child care centers. Our organization was founded by Elnora Williams in 1941."Mothers in 1941 were being employed for the first time in large numbers in the defense industry and not only in New Bedford as many mothers were traveling to Newport,RI each morning to go to work. Grandmothers also were leaving the home for the industrial plant. This left many young children from 2-4 years of age locked out of the home and unattended in the yard. Their older brothers and sisters were in school. This evident social need was the reason for the nursery's beginning."
