     Weir River Farm is looking for an individual with a background in carpentry interested undertaking building projects. Interested individuals should have a basic knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures. The majority of this work will be carried out and completed individually but there will be several opportunities to assist on larger projects with Trustees staff.

 

Duties:

Construct or repair trail or farm structures e.g. chicken coop, trail kiosk, sign boards, fences, footbridges, picnic tables, nest boxes, etc. Perform structural repairs or renovations e.g. barn siding, trim, doors, office and bathroom renovation, outbuildings Assist with design/drawings of office and bathroom renovations Cleaning up workshop, tuning up and repairing power and hand tool

 

Qualifications:

Ability to work with tools, lumber, and materials ability to organize assigned tasks, for completion alone or with help Knowledge of power tools and hand tools along with an understanding of how to safely use each tool is necessary  Individuals should have some experience and ability in reading as well as drawing plans Knowledge of building structures including but not limited to ceilings, windows, frames, roofs, as well as independent structures (chicken coops) is necessary

Duties:

Working with staff to fix structures around the farm Fixing doorways, windows etc. from wear and tear of active barn use

    This volunteer position would help plant, weed and manage a small children's garden consisting of 6 raised beds on the Weir River Farm property.  The ideal candidate would have experience with taking care of a small vegetable garden and be available a few times a week during the summer growing season.

 

Qualifications:

Desire to help plant an educational Children's Garden and help develop the children's interest and understanding of gardening Managing a watering and weeding schedule Ability to work with staff and Counselors-in-training to educate children about the garden

Volunteer: Stone Wall Steward - World's End, Hingham

This 251-acre peninsula has historic and beautiful stonewalls crisscrossing the former farmlands and grassland habitat. Volunteers will be working with staff to maintain these structures by removing vegetation and rebuilding damaged sections. While the tasks may be laborious, the work results in the idyllic landscapes known to thousands of visitors each year. 

 

Duties:

Work with staff to rebuild collapsed sections of walls Remove vines, weeds, and other vegetation covering walls

 

Qualifications:

Ability to work as part of a team or crew Comfortable working in outdoor weather (heat, cold, wind) Knowledge (or interested in learning about) hand tools such as clippers, loppers, and shears. 

 

Duties:

Clearing of stone walls around World's End Stacking stones that have fallen off the wall (within a reasonable size limit) Piling debris in open areas to be burnt at the appropriate time of year

Time commitment:

Monthly meeting with time to be decided and/or people going out and working on a project as their time allows

Knowledge of power tools and hand tools along with an understanding of how to safely use each tool is necessary Ability to work with tools, lumber, and materials. Interested individuals will have an ability to organize assigned tasks, for completion alone or with help. Individuals should have some experience and ability in reading as well as drawing plans. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work in various weather conditions, often in an outdoor environment  Must be able to use tools safely and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

 

 

Time Commitment:

Minimum of 10 to 12 hours per month with a 6 month commitment. Volunteer will spend majority of time working independently allowing for a flexible schedule.

Successful volunteers are friendly, enthusiastic, willing to learn on the job, reliable, and good representatives of the Trustees of the Reservations.

 

Responsibilities:

Garden maintenance including: weeding, staking, pruning, mulching, raking, edging trails, and planting. Work with hand tools to maintain landscapes and flower beds. Assist the Superintendent with plant classification and cataloging as well as documenting historical aspects of the park. Option to assist at various year-round events for the public.

 

Qualifications:

Experience with perennial and tree identification desired, but not required. Basic gardening experience preferred. Interest in learning advance techniques of pruning and cultivation. Able to handle physical nature of gardening, such as lifting, kneeling, walking over uneven ground, and work with hand tools. Good work ethic.

 

Time Commitment:

One set day a week from March to December.
