Volunteer: English Literacy Tutor

The City of New Bedford’s Department of Community Services is recruiting volunteers to teach English Literacy in conjunction with the Shining Lights program.

Volunteers will work with the City of New Bedford team to teach basic English Literacy and to connect immigrants and refugees with community resources. Volunteeers' main duties will include:

Teaching beginning level English literacy (basic reading & writing skills) a minimum of 2 hours per week Assisting the Department of Community Services with outreach, direct services, and dissemination of information to limited English speakers in the city.

Instructors are needed for the following classes:

 Tuesday 6-8 p.m.

Thursday 6-8 p.m.

Online - any day or time convenient to the teacher.

Volunteers must undergo a CORI criminal record check.

Would you like to help others learn about what they can do to protect themselves as consumers? The New Bedford Local Consumer Program, funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General, assists residents in the Southeastern MA region by offering free mediation services for consumer complaints and providing information on consumer protection laws. The New Bedford LCP is currently seeking volunteers willing to do public presentations on consumer rights issues. Hours are extemely flexible, and training will be provided.
