United Way’s Mobile Market provides free, locally grown produce to residents of Greater New Bedford in a farmer’s market style setup. Produce is grown at Sharing the Harvest, a program of YMCA Southcoast Dartmouth.

Volunteer Job Description
Mobile Market volunteers will assist the set up (beginning at 5pm) and break down of the Mobile Market. Mobile Market operates from 5:30 – 7 pm or until all produce is depleted. BankFive Mobile Markets rotate between two locations in New Bedford.

At the beginning of your shift, let the Mobile Market coordinator know if you are bilingual or have any physical limitations (ie. Can’t lift heavy boxes, can’t stand for long periods) – this will help with evening assignments.

Food Truck Festivals of America is thrilled to be bringing our family-friendly 9th New Bedford Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival to Fort Taber on Saturday, October 4th and we’d love your help!

Make a difference in a veteran's life...volunteer to be a veteran wheelchair van driver to transport them to their medical appointments (locally in the Rockland area) or to the VA medical centers. Pick up veterans and their family members in the wheelchair van and transport them to and from their home or Rockland COA. The veteran officer at the Rockland COA will match volunteer's availability with veteran's appointments.

The Plymouth Supportive Housing Program gets food deliveries from the Salvation Army to all 5 Plymouth sites on the first Thursday of every month. A lot of the residents depend on this monthly food delivery. They are in need of volunteers to assist with unloading the boxes of food from the Salvation Army truck and deliver them into the community rooms.

Partners for Youth with Disabilities is teaming up with the Boys and Girls Club of Metro South to offer Mentoring to their youth and we are looking for Passionate volunteers like you to Join! PYD offers one to one friendship based mentoring for young people with Disabilities aimed at helping young people develope social skills!  Mentors will be paired with disabled youth ages 13-18 based on common interests. Animal care volunteers have the opportunity to work directly with a variety of farm animals that come from abuse or neglect situations. This rewarding opportunity allows you to spend your morning or afternoon around the animals and really get to know them. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, and various other projects to help maintain the animals living space, their housing, and the grounds of the sanctuary.

We do require at least a one-year commitment for animal care volunteers to be considered for the position. Volunteers have one 4hr shift each week and are we anticipate our volunteers to have a 75% attendance rate or more. Animal care never takes a day off. We also need people with reliable vehicles that can get through a snowstorm or other weather hazards. Volunteers must be able to work holidays if your shift falls on a holiday. As a volunteer you will have a background check, orientation, 2 step TB test and drug screen completed before visiting patients.

Come help us with our Brush with Kindness projects as we provide critical home repairs and wheelchair ramp installations for low-income families on the South Coast. Projects may include simple carpentry, house painting and metal ramp installation, all with the help of our volunteer supervisor. Handyman skills and a willingness to help are all you need! Many of the people we are helping are elderly and/or people with disabilities, and we are helping them to stay in their homes which is where they want to be. Come join us!

The Department of Children and Families offers a unique opportunity for community volunteers who would like to make a difference in a foster child's life. For a few hours of your time each month, you can participate on a panel that helps plan a brighter future for each child in care. DCF is required by law to review each foster child's case every six months. The review is conducted by a three member panel, with one member being from the local community. A volunteer reviewer can make a difference for a child. 

The family, DCF social workers, foster parents and others working with the family meet to review an action plan and discuss progress towards the established goal for each child. 

Volunteer Case Reviewers are community members (not employed by the Department of Children and Families) who participate on panels to review the case of children who have been placed in foster homes or group homes.

Each review lasts about an hour and a half and is conducted at a local Department of Children and Families area office. Reviews occur Monday - Friday during the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The South Coast Bikeway Alliance needs volunteers in each of the ten member communities to work with their city and towns and the SCBA to advance their portion of the South Coast Bikeway. Cities and towns included in this plan are Swansea, Somerset, Fall River, Westport, Dartmouth, New Bedford, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Marion and Wareham.

The South Coast Bikeway Alliance was started informally in the summer of 2011 and was formally incorporated in 2014.The SCBA is a non-profit organization made up of community representatives and groups that work with local leaders and organizations to advocate for and build the networks of bikeways throughout the South Coast region. Our overall goal is to promote active transportation and recreation. The committee has representatives from each South Coast Bikeway community plus representatives from UMass Dartmouth, the YMCA South Coast/Voices for a Healthy South Coast, and Mass in Motion Fall River and New Bedford.  The committee is supported by SRPEDD's Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Program and typically meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

Volunteers help with grant applications, event planning, advocacy, education and outreach. We meet monthly to share our news, challenges and successes. Currently our meetings are held via zoom and in person.  Meetings are held in person in the greater New Bedford area. Please share your time and talent with us and help complete the South Coast Bikeway.  Non-cyclists are welcome!

The New Bedford Local Consumer Program, funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General, assists residents in the Southeastern MA region by offering free mediation services for consumer complaints and providing information on consumer protection laws. The New Bedford LCP is currently seeking volunteers willing to do public presentations on consumer rights issues. Hours are extemely flexible, and training will be provided. The Office of Human Services is seeking volunteers to assist with child care during its Shining Lights ESOL Program. Shining Lights is a free program designed for beginner / pre-beginner students of English as a Second Language. The program meets Tuesdays & Thursdays, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. October through May in New Bedford. Volunteers can choose to work any number of evenings per week. No teaching experience necessary; CORI required.

The role of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors are simply to be an adult friend to a child who could benefit from an additional caring adult in their life.  Adult volunteers (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) meet with their mentee (Littles) at the child's school - during the lunch break one day a week for an hour.

Participating schools: Talbot Middle School in Fall River

The "match" - a one-to-one friendship between an adult and a child of the same gender - gets together weekly for the whole school year to talk, play games, shoot hoops or just hang out. Because positive outcomes result from long-term friendships, we ask that volunteers "Bigs" commit to spending at least the full school year with their Little.

There is no set curriculum, however site-based suggested activity guides are provided. The agency provides professional support to the family, the child and the volunteer to make sure the friendship grows and deepens and that any bumps in the road are overcome.

The CSJ Ed Fund is always looking for motivated volunteers that would like to join us in addressing economic and social inequities throughout the state of MA.

The Nursing Home Ombudsman Program matches community volunteers with area nursing homes. 

The Ombudsman is a resident advocate, helping to ensure the quality of care, life and environment for people who live in nursing homes. Volunteers make weekly visits to the nursing home to listen to and assist in resolving any resident concerns.

Volunteers receive training and ongoing support and supervision.

The Money Management Program is looking for volunteers to help seniors organize their bills, create budgets, write checks, and monitor their income and expenses.

Coastline’s Foster Grandparent Program, which has been in existence for over 35 years, offers volunteers the opportunity to assist children in classrooms throughout the South Coast. 

The students and teachers both benefit from the wisdom and experience of the Foster Grandparent volunteer as he or she works one-on-one and in small groups with children, focusing on literacy and academics, communication, and social skills, which are needed to help a child succeed. This program provides a way to stay active by serving children in the community.

The Foster Grandparents volunteer a minimum of 15 hours each week. Foster Grandparent volunteers receive a small tax-free stipend* for their time and commitment, while benefiting from the impact they make in a child’s life on a daily basis. The program is intended for those age 55 years and older who meet income and criminal history eligibility requirements.

Seeking caring, compassionate volunteers to staff our suicide prevention crisis hotline.  Each volunteer participates in a mandatory 35-hour training program which includes working with a trained volunteer. Trainings are scheduled for May, September, November, and January.  Volunteers are asked to cover a 2.5-hour shift weekly.  A minimum of a 6-month commitment is expected.

Internships - for credit and paid - are offered to undergraduate and graduate-level students currently enrolled in a college or university in the U.S. 

Prospective volunteers must also undergo a background check as part of the application process. 

All volunteer work is done remotely. Volunteers must have a quiet, confidential space to work in.

Bristol Elder Services (Bristol) is seeking volunteers who are interested in elder issues to serve as members of its Advisory Council. The Advisory Council meets every other month on the 4th Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in Fall River (currently virtually) and its purpose is to recommend to Bristol’s Board of Directors activities regarding elder needs.   

Interested parties must live or work in Attleboro, Berkley, Dighton, Fall River, Freetown, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norton, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk, Somerset, Swansea, Taunton, or Westport.  Bristol is especially interested in those 60 years of age or older and/or representatives of minority populations.

To serve on a Disaster Action Team as a worker on a DAT response to provide 24-hour immediate support and assistance to individuals and families who have been impacted by a home fire or other local disaster.

Works as part of an assigned team to respond to local disasters within two hours.

Delivers immediate direct client assistance in accordance with Red Cross standards and procedures.

Works with on-scene lead to assess whether additional resources/support are required and communicates those needs to DAT Leadership.

Attends regularly scheduled team/DAT meetings as required by Chapter/Region.

Commits to being available during assigned shifts, and communicate scheduling conflicts with DAT Leadership.

A Community Volunteer Leader is a single point of contact for Brockton, Fall River, or New Bedford with the primary goal of connecting the community with the Red Cross mission.

1. VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT: Recruit and refer prospective volunteers and volunteer groups to American Red Cross in support of District and Regional goals and metrics. Help recruit a volunteer workforce that is both inclusive and represents the demographics of the community. As an advocate, represent the Red Cross volunteer needs within the community. Maintain appropriate level of communication with Volunteer Director and Mission Leads to understand volunteer priorities and needs. Example: Meet with local City Manager to explore training city Disaster Service Workers as Red Cross Shelter volunteers.

2. RED CROSS PRESENCE & CONNECTIVITY: Serve as the primary connector between the defined geography and the American Red Cross mission. As a credible leader in the community, help represent the community needs and opportunities back to Red Cross Regional Leadership. Utilizes established communication channels to communicate community needs and stay current on Red Cross programs and messaging. To help build / regain presence, serve as the face of Red Cross at local community events and serve as primary public affairs / local communicator in defined geography during “blue skies”. Example: Present our Red Cross one-year Oklahoma update to the local Rotary Club.

3. RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Cultivate, manage and steward external partner relationships to help create and maintain connectedness within defined community, managing a portfolio of key stakeholders. Portfolio of relationships within assigned geography will include elected officials, key government agencies, community groups, faith-based; colleges/universities, civic, NGOs/NPOs, military organizations. Maintain appropriate level of communication with Regional leadership and Mission Leads to ensure consistent messaging and priorities. Example: Meet twice a year with the local State Assemblyman to share primary Red Cross campaigns and seek district office support.

4. MISSION DELIVERY SUPPORT UNDER THE DIRECTION OF REGIONAL LEADERSHIP: Promote and facilitate opportunities across all relevant lines of service within assigned geography. Leverage social capital and relationships to expand local Red Cross mission in support of regional goals and objectives. Maintain appropriate level of communication with Mission Leads. Example: Meet with local Superintendent of Schools to promote High School Blood Drives.
Examples of Day-to-Day Activities
• Provides Red Cross updates to local service clubs (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.).
• Participates in local community events as an extension of Executive Director.
• Shares volunteer needs within social networks / circles of influence based on consultation with Volunteer Director and Mission Leads.
• Routine meetings with key stakeholders (fire chiefs, mayors, veteran organizations, local media partners).
• Community volunteer leaders will rely on Mission Leads (i.e. RDPO) and mission volunteers (i.e. Disaster Services Chair) for functional expertise.

Brown Bag Program; This Boston Food Bank Program allows eligible people to receive a full brown bag of food once a month. Our volunteers work very hard to unload the truck, fill the bags and distribute these goods. Mornings start at 7:00 am and that includes (if physically able) unloading of truck and the filling of the bags of food. Afternoon help is also needed, to hand out bags to individuals for a couple of hours. This is a tremendous help to people who are counting their pennies.This program meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month. 

The Brockton Brown Bag site needs volunteers who are comfortable working on computers to help with Adding Assistance to participants' records.  The site has a dedicated team of volunteers from the Dorn Davies and surrounding community to staff the distribution.  But are in need of volunteers with computer skills.  GBFB is introducing an online, cloud-based, registration system to all of our partner sites.  Dorn Davies needs volunteers dedicated to the site monthly for 3-5  hours   Hours are flexible.

Volunteering for hospice can be a very rewarding experience. It enables volunteers to get involved in a program that offers much appreciated services to the patients and families served by the hospice program.

Hospice Volunteer Opportunities:

The role of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors are simply to be an adult friend to a child who could benefit from an additional caring adult in their life.  Adult volunteers (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) meet with their mentee (Littles) at the child's school - during the lunch break one day a week for an hour.

Participating schools: Sgt. William Carney Memorial Elementary School

The "match" - a one-to-one friendship between an adult and a child of the same gender - gets together weekly for the whole school year to talk, play games, shoot hoops or just hang out. Because positive outcomes result from long-term friendships, we ask that volunteers "Bigs" commit to spending at least the full school year with their Little.

There is no set curriculum, however site-based suggested activity guides are provided. The agency provides professional support to the family, the child and the volunteer to make sure the friendship grows and deepens and that any bumps in the road are overcome.

Bristol Elder Services (Bristol) is looking for volunteers for its Long Term Care Ombudsman program. An Ombudsman volunteer acts as an advocate for residents living in facilities such as nursing homes or rest homes. Ombudsmen offer a way for residents and their loved ones to voice their complaints and have their concerns addressed so that residents can live their lives with dignity and respect.

The program’s goals are to improve residents’ quality of care, life, and environment; to advocate for the protection of their rights; and to provide information about long term care issues affecting nursing and rest home residents in the greater Attleboro, Fall River, and Taunton areas.

Ombudsman volunteers receive training and support from Bristol. Margaret Pilkington, Program Manager of Bristol’s Ombudsman Program, explains that volunteers advocate for residents’ rights, working at the direction of the resident. She states that "It all begins by completing an application and meeting to talk about the Ombudsman role. After that, there is classroom training, and then hands on experience." Volunteers meet once a month to talk over their experiences, learn new information, and spend some time just catching up.

Provide support for the patient/family including companionship, run errands, respite care for patient caregivers, and other support needs for patients/family/caregivers.

Bay State Community Services, is looking for a team of volunteers that can help improve the lives of teens living in group homes on the South Shore. We are looking to create a team that can help us fill some holes in what we can provide to the kids.

We house 42 kids twenty-four hours per day seven days a week. We work hard to create a warm, homey, and welcoming environment for our kids who are dealing with many challenges.  We are able to feed and shelter them, make sure they are safe and have great staff to work with them, but it is harder to provide them with the extras that make all the difference when you are a teenager. 

Due to the nature of our programs, this wouldn’t be an on site volunteer program where you come to the houses. Most of this work would be done behind the scenes. At the beginning, I will provide the volunteer team guidance and training on how to connect with businesses and individuals in your community that might be able to donate items to the kids.

The FRSTPP needs a person to organize our tree plantings. You would visit the site (along with our City arborist), pick a tree type, pick a date for the planting, and schedule the planting with City Community Maintenance and the volunteers, and be there on the day of planting. We'll help get you started. If you are a tree person and a people person, this will be ideal for you and a huge help for us. 

Assist parents with their children to have safe and nurturing visits in Brockton, Quincy and Hyannis locations.  Supervised Visitation Assistants monitor and report on visits.

Every day our Mental Health Services clinicians meet with clients in their offices.  Some of these offices could use a little bit of a face-lift with a new coat of paint!  Having a warm and inviting space helps to put our clients at ease. 

This would be a great project for a Corporate Team Building activity or a meaningful group project for a Service Organization.  Would your company consider making a donation towards paint supplies for this project?

Sharing the Harvest is a volunteer-driven community farm established in 2006 as a grassroots effort to fight hunger and help feed our neighbors in need.  Thanks to the help of the Hunger Commission, donors and thousands of volunteers, we donate 100% of our produce and cage-free eggs to local hunger relief programs in New Bedford, Fall River and Wareham.

Sharing the Harvest Community Farm is seeking volunteers to work in our fields for our 2019 growing season. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who love food, farming and the outdoors!

We have regular farm field volunteer hours May-October, Tuesday-Friday from 9am-12pm and 2pm-5pm, and on Saturdays from 9am-12pm.  You may choose to stay the entire shift, or just stay for an hour, we are grateful for any time you can donate! We ask that groups over 5 contact us beforehand in order to coordinate an appropriate project for the size of your group. All work is done outdoors, rain or shine.  Our most common tasks are planting seeds in the greenhouse, transplanting seedlings into the fields, cultivating crops and harvesting the mature plants.  We also wash, weigh, and record the produce totals prior to donation.  There are also chicken care opportunities.   We provide all the necessary tools and training.  No experience necessary!

Through traditional one-to-one matching, Old Colony Y Mentoring provides guidance and support to children ages 9-17, living in Brockton and 28 surrounding communities. Current mentoring programs include: traditional community based one-to-one mentoring, group and site-based mentoring, and monthly "While on Waitlist" activities for youth waiting for mentors.

Volunteer mentors are at least 21 years of age and are matched for a minimum of one year with their mentee. Old Colony Y Mentoring puts great thought into making a thoughtful and intentional match and many things are taken into account such as interests and hobbies, geographical location, and personality traits. The ideal mentor is an open-minded, responsible, and caring adult who wants to give back to the community and support a child in need.

Volunteers undergo an extensive training process in order to provide our mentors with the tools they need to create deeper and more intentional change. Training topics focus on building relationships, working with families, and understanding issues that youth may experience.

Help the president organize and prepare site assessments for street tree requests. Also help with keeping track of tree planting requests and the order in which they can be completed and with updating the inventory of trees at the tree farm. Attending monthly meetings is also helpful to get to know the other members.

We're now preparing to plant for the fall, so we'll be looking for help with that too. Come and meet our friendly group!

Volunteer time would vary, but could range from 2 to 10 hours/week.

Parents come to our support groups seeking encouragement and feedback on parenting-related issues. Shared leadership, trust, respect, responsibility, and positive parenting are key components of our support groups. Our groups provided a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for creating positive and caring peer relationships. Our approach is preventative; once the emotional support of the parent has been strengthened, a parent is better able to actively guide and nurture the family.

We need a volunteer (YOU!) to act as a group facilitator for a parent support group at a domestic Violence shelter in the Cambridge, MA area. As a facilitator, you will be maintaining the safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment which characterizes our support groups.

LOCAL CONSUMER PROGRAM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS Are you aware of your consumer rights? Do you know what to do if your identity is stolen? Can you spot an Internet or telemarketing scam? Would you like to help others learn about what they can do to protect themselves as consumers? The New Bedford Local Consumer Program, funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General, assists residents in the Southeastern MA region by offering free mediation services for consumer complaints and providing information on consumer protection laws. The New Bedford LCP is currently seeking volunteers willing to handle intake phone calls, provide non-legal information to consumers and provide light clerical support to LCP staff. YWCA SEMA is interested in convening focus groups to gather more information from the community about our shared advocacy agenda.

We will convene focus groups across Southeastern Massachusetts on the issue of Accessible and Affordable Childcare.

We are seeking community volunteers to help facilitate at these focus groups.

Sharing the Harvest Community Farm is seeking to expand our Volunteer Leader Program. We are looking for enthusiastic, reliable individuals who love food, farming and the outdoors!

Sharing the Harvest Farm is a volunteer-driven community farm established in 2006 as a grassroots effort to fight hunger for our neighbors in need. Our mission is to alleviate hunger throughout the south coast region of Massachusetts, promote volunteerism and raise hunger awareness in our communities through education. All produce grown on the farm is donated.

The requirements are simple: flexible commitment, convey the mission of Sharing the Harvest to others, orient groups, maintain a positive work environment, and recruit other volunteers. Don't worry! If you’re not familiar with the work we do on the farm, we’ll be happy to train you.
