Volunteer: Lunch Buddies Program: Talbot Middle School Fall River

The role of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors are simply to be an adult friend to a child who could benefit from an additional caring adult in their life.  Adult volunteers (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) meet with their mentee (Littles) at the child's school - during the lunch break one day a week for an hour.

Participating schools: Talbot Middle School in Fall River

The "match" - a one-to-one friendship between an adult and a child of the same gender - gets together weekly for the whole school year to talk, play games, shoot hoops or just hang out. Because positive outcomes result from long-term friendships, we ask that volunteers "Bigs" commit to spending at least the full school year with their Little.

There is no set curriculum, however site-based suggested activity guides are provided. The agency provides professional support to the family, the child and the volunteer to make sure the friendship grows and deepens and that any bumps in the road are overcome.

Our first meeting will be August 9th via Zoom.  Day of event volunteers to help with set up and break down, work the registration table, hand out participant t-shirts, run games and activities at the fair, and hand out water at water stations along the course.

Volunteer: Ocean to Plate: New Bedford Fishing Community

We're looking for friendly individuals who want to get involved in the community - whether you're part of a fishing family, interested in history, love seafood, or just enjoy talking to people, we're thrilled to welcome you to the crew!

There are a variety of opportunities for volunteers, ranging from welcoming visitors and staffing the reception area to assisting with educational programs, research, collections management, and special events. We'd like to have volunteers help engage visitors with the exhibits by interacting in conversation. We also want volunteers who are interested in helping out with group visits, research, cataloging, and more.

If you are a member of the commercial fishing community, we invite you to share your industry knowledge by leading walking tours of the waterfront, demonstrating industry skills and marine crafts, or talking to school groups about your work.

New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, located in the New Bedford National Park, engages visitors with our major exhibit More Than a Job: Work and Community in New Bedford’s Fishing Industry. With a working deck and foc’sle, the exhibit includes interactive elements like a fish identification board and a wheelhouse where you can operate the radar. Authentic voices from those in the industry are captured at 60 audio stations, and a celebration of the diversity of New Bedford’s fishing community is shown throughout. People of all ages are finding the Center moving, entertaining and inspiring!

Volunteers are provided with insider talks from experts and tours of local fishing businesses as ongoing learning opportunities. Training is provided about museum exhibits, the gift shop, membership, programming and the fishing community of New Bedford. If you and/or your family are fishermen please join us and teach us a thing or two! This is a great opportunity to share what you know about the commercial fishing industry and local fishing community.

Volunteer hours are flexible and can be scheduled according to your availability. Please email operations@ fishingheritagecenter.org for more information or call 508-993-8894.

Volunteer: Writers for the South Shore Community Magazine

The South Shore Community Magazine has been ongoing for over 10 years. We publish quarterly every 3rd month - March, June, September, and December. The deadlines for submissions are at the end of every preceding month - February, May, August, and November.    All writing is published for free and due to it being a non-profit magazine, we are a volunteer magazine.   We accept the following content:   Articles in the following 6 topics: Faith Effective Education Safe Spaces Caring Adults  Opportunities to Serve Health and Wellness   We have a Community Spotlight section that features articles about people or organizations who are doing outstanding things in the community. We also have a featured article section that focuses on something big happening in the community or at our Family Resource Center surrounding the time of the publication.    We also accept creative writing, photography, and art. This is a great chance for writers to get out there and get published and have material printed for resumes, portfolios, etc.    All submissions must be non-controversial and free of hateful or derogatory content.    We also have affordable advertising for everyone. This advertising is what pays for our magazine so we are always pushing for people to spread the word about this great opportunity! We encourage our contributors to help us obtain advertising.   We are back to printing. Printing is as soon as possible after we are virtually released (dependent on the printing company). Copies can be picked up here at the Family Center upon request.    We meet once monthly to discuss the collection of content for the magazine as well as the planning for our free Annual Leadership Conference. Interested parties can email me at Kasey.Martin@ccbrockton.org to be added to the distribution list for the invites and can learn more information then.    Please visit www.uwgpc.org/frc/south-shore-community-magazine to find out more information and check out the magazine.

Volunteer: Volunteer as a Food Rescuer to FEED PEOPLE, NOT LANDFILLS!

Thousands of Massachusetts and Rhode Island households cannot reliably access food. Meanwhile, about 40% of it feeds landfills. That’s where Rescuing Leftover Cuisine steps in. Our mission is to prevent consumable excess food from being wasted by redirecting it to feed people instead of landfills!

Sign up to volunteer as a FOOD RESCUER at www.rescuingleftovercuisine.org/volunteer! Use an email address that you check regularly - this is where Rescue Event notifications are sent to. After signing up, click your avatar to go to your dashboard - you'll see the next steps to activate your account.

No minimum time commitment is required - you may sign up to volunteer sporadically or on a recurring basis. Documentation for proof of volunteering is available upon request. Guidelines are in place to ensure zero person-to-person contact.

Whether you are 9 or 99, on 2 feet or 4 wheels, solo or as a team, you can volunteer with RLC! An average Rescue Event averages 40 minutes to pick up surplus food or meals prepared for donation from businesses and deliver them to designated recipients using our web-based Food Rescue App. Food Donors include restaurants, hotels, schools, caterers and others. Recipients include shelters, soup kitchens and other human service agencies who serve people experiencing homelessness, hunger and food insecurity, and eligible households in partnership with local schools and organizations.

Volunteer: Mentors Needed for Carney Academy Students

The role of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors are simply to be an adult friend to a child who could benefit from an additional caring adult in their life.  Adult volunteers (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) meet with their mentee (Littles) at the child's school - during the lunch break one day a week for an hour.

Participating schools: Sgt. William Carney Memorial Elementary School

The program’s goals are to improve residents’ quality of care, life, and environment; to advocate for the protection of their rights; and to provide information about long term care issues affecting nursing and rest home residents in the greater Attleboro, Fall River, and Taunton areas.

Ombudsman volunteers receive training and support from Bristol. Margaret Pilkington, Program Manager of Bristol’s Ombudsman Program, explains that volunteers advocate for residents’ rights, working at the direction of the resident. She states that "It all begins by completing an application and meeting to talk about the Ombudsman role. After that, there is classroom training, and then hands on experience." Volunteers meet once a month to talk over their experiences, learn new information, and spend some time just catching up.

Volunteer: Big Brothers Needed!

With boys referred to our program at a rate 4 times greater than girls, the need for male mentors (Big Brothers) is ever present.

Being a Big is simple, a few hours, twice a month is all takes to help defend and ignite potential for Southcoast youth. No one is too young (18) or too old (our oldest Big is in his 80's) to make a lasting impact on the life of a child, and your own. From hiking, biking, trips to the beach, mini-golf, ice cream or simply hanging out, the time that you spend helps to guide and shape a future generation of youth. In our program, you're never alone to figure it out, each volunteer has a professional trained support person to guide them through the life of their mentoring friendship.

With COVID-19, we have programs for all comfort levels. From virtual mentoring to socially distanced in person outings, we ensure the safety of our Bigs, Littles and their families.

You can start the process immediately by visiting our website and scheduling your own volunteer interview, or respond to this opportunity and a member of our team will reach out to you!

Not a guy, but know someone who would make a great Big Brother? Forward them this opportunity today!
