The New Bedford Whaling Museum would like to enlist your talents, your curiosity about local history and whaling history and your desire to contribute to local educational opportunities. We are seeking new docents for our school and public programs and new volunteers to work behind-the-scenes. Docents lead our student visitors through our galleries as they learn from one of our many programs that have been created to connect state curriculum frameworks to our collections. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a cohesive, experienced team that teaches more than 10,000 students a year. Our behind-the-scenes volunteers contribute to our knowledge of whaling and local history and our ability to share these stories with visiting scholars and on-line visitors.
The volunteer course meets once a week for 10 weeks, for 2 1/2 hours, from 9:30-12:00pm. The next course begins on Monday, July 11 and continues until Monday, September 12. Every class will take place on a Monday, except for Tuesday, July 26. You will learn about the Museum, its history, our galleries, local industries - past and present and meet several staff and volunteers.
